CHAPTER 15

A LIGHT IN THE DARK

Just close your eyes

The sun is going down

You'll be alright

No one can hurt you now

Come morning light

You and I'll be safe and sound

"SAFE AND SOUND"- TAYLOR SWIFT FT. THE CIVIL WARS.

VIVIENNE'S POV:

As I paced around in my bedroom thinking through everything about what I can do and what should be done and how can I be in 2 places at the same fucking time.

Should I call her and say that I can't make it today or should I call Caroline and tell her I can't come to the masquerade party today.

Earlier this evening:

I was going inside my room when my phone buzzed, I pulled it out as I closed the door and checked to see who is it.

Evelyn hart

Her name flashed across the screen, and a sudden wave of concern came over me, I haven't heard from her in a while, and she isn't the one to call, she only calls me when something is wrong, without hesitation I answered.

"Eveyln, What's wrong?" I asked, my voice calm not wanting to put her on edge if she is already worried.

"Viv," she started, her tone strained, "I need you. Can you come to Lexington? Please?"

Lexington is hours away from Mystic falls, and plus tonight. My stomach twisted thinking of what if I went away and something happens.

"Lexington? Evelyn, tell me what happened," I asked her wanting to know what this is about.

She hesitated before responding. "It's complicated. I wouldn't ask if it wasn't serious. Please, Vivienne."

A thousand thoughts rushed through my mind, but the urgency in her voice was undeniable. "I'll be on my way" and I cut the call.

Present

Just as I was going to call Care, she entered my room, all ready to go the party, "Come on Viv, you gotta get ready," she says her tone rushed.
"Care, I can't go with you," I said and her expression showed that she is confused.

"Why? What happened?" she asks, "Eveyln called said that it's urgent and she needs me, I wouldn't go if it wasn't important, you know that," I tried to make her understand.

"But what about Katherine? We were supposed to trap her tonight." Her brows furrowed; the disappointment clear in her voice.

I stepped closer, placing my hands on her shoulders. "You're strong, Caroline. You don't need me there to handle this. Just stick to the plan. Make sure everything goes exactly how we discussed."

Her eyes searched mine worry creeping in.

"And be careful," I added, squeezing her shoulders gently. "Katherine's dangerous, Care. Promise me you'll watch your back." She nodded slowly, her resolve strengthening.

"I will. But Viv, promise you'll call if anything happens with Eveyln. And come back soon."

A soft smile tugged at my lips. "I promise."

AUTHOR'S POV

Vivienne's car glided through the darkened streets of Lexington; her thoughts as tangled as the winding road ahead. The familiar sight of the town- the quaint houses, the quiet streets- brought a strange sense of peace, but it couldn't shake the unease gnawing at her gut.

Evelyn had called her, and the urgency in her voice had left no room for hesitation. She knew something was wrong.

She pulled up in front of a charming house, the faint light from the windows spilling out into the front yard. It was a cozy place- modest, welcoming. But tonight, it felt distant. The peace of Lexington felt fragile, like a veil that could be torn away with the right pull.

Vivienne took a deep breath before stepping out of the car, her heels clicking on the pavement as she walked toward the door. Before she could even reach the knocker, it swung open, and Eveyln stood there, her face a mixture of relief and anxiety.

"Vivienne," Evelyn's voice was soft, almost as though she hadn't expected her to actually show up. But the moment she saw her, she pulled Vivienne into an embrace, a gesture of both comfort and gratitude.

"Ev, what's going on?" Vivienne asked, pulling back slightly, her eyes searching her friend's face. Evelyn, usually calm and composed, looked shaken, her eyes betraying a sense of helplessness.

"It's lily..." Evelyn started, her voice trembling slightly. "Let's go inside first."

They both made their way inside the living room and sat on the couch as Evelyn continued. "She's been having these. dreams. Dark, twisted ones. Every night. And they're getting worse."

Vivienne's brow furrowed, the mention of dreams piquing her interest. "What kind of dreams?"

"Fire, shadows, whispers," Evelyn said, shaking her head. "And she's been seeing someone. Someone watching her, she says it feels real- like they're not just dreams anymore."

Vivienne's mind raced, "Ev, why don't you use your magic to see what it is?" she asked Evelyn.

Evelyn's face fell, and she looked away for a moment, as though the question had been too much. "I can't. I haven't used magic since the day I cloaked us. After everything that happened, I promised I wouldn't risk it again. Using magic leaves a trace, Viv. If I break that silence, they'll know where we are."

Vivienne placed a hand gently on her shoulder, her voice soft but firm. "You've always been there for me, Ev. Now it's my turn. Let me help Lily."

Eveyln nodded; the weight of her decision heavy on her shoulders. "I know. But it's not just Lily. There's something in her dreams- something dark, something old. I can't see it, Vivienne. I need you to look deeper. I can't-"

"You don't have to," Vivienne interrupted gently, her eyes softening. "I'll do it."

Eveyln looked at her with gratitude, mixed with the fear she'd been carrying. "I just want her to be safe, Viv. I can't lose her. Not like this."

Vivienne took a deep breath, glancing toward the staircase that led to Lily's room. The air in the house was heavy, as if the very walls held memories Evelyn was trying to forget. She gave Evelyn's hand a reassuring squeeze before making her way up the stairs.

At the top, she paused in front of Lily's door. It was slightly ajar, the soft glow of a bedside lamp casting shadows against the walls. Vivienne pushed it open slowly.

Lily sat on the bed, her knees drawn to her chest, wide eyes staring into the darkened corners of her room. When she saw Vivienne, a small flicker of relief passed over her face, but it quickly faded.

"You're here," Lily whispered, her voice barely audible.

Vivienne took a few steps closer, her gaze steady and reassuring. "Your mom called me, I'm here to help."

As soon as Vivienne was closer to Lily, she pulled Vivienne in a hug hold her like she's desperately trying to be in the present. Vivienne sat down still holding her to her chest. "It's okay, baby. Nothing will happen to you." Lily pulled away as she heard the sincerity in Vivienne's voice.

"They are real, Vivienne. They feel real. There's someone out there, watching me."

Vivienne brushed a stray strand of hair from Lily's face. "Tell me about them. Every detail, no matter how small."

Lily's hands gripped the blanket tightly. "it's always the same," she whispered. "I'm running, but there's this... figure. I can never see their face, but they're always there. Watching. And then... fire. It's everywhere. And I can hear someone calling my name."

Vivienne's heart clenched at the sight of Lily going through this at very young age. Through Eveyln's magic had shielded them for years, whatever was haunting Lily had found a way in- through her dreams.

"I can feel it too," Lily continued, her voice breaking slightly. "Like it's not just a dream, like it's real, they say that not much longer before we catch you, I'm scared Vivienne."

Vivienne's jaw tightened. She didn't need to sense magic to know how deeply the fear had embedded itself into Lily. It was written all over her face.

Evelyn lingered in the doorway; her arms crossed tightly. The guilt she carried was evident, though she said nothing.

"We'll figure it out," Vivienne said firmly. "You're not alone, Lily. Whatever this is, I'll find out. And we'll stop it."

Lily nodded, her eyes searching Vivienne's for reassurance.

Evelyn's voice broke through the tense silence. "What now?"

"We start digging," Vivienne said, determination set in her gaze. "No magic means no trace. But that doesn't mean I can't find out what's happening. I'll protect her. I promise."

The shadows outside seemed to loom closer, but Vivienne stood resolute. She wouldn't let Lily face this alone. Not while she was there.

She snapped out of her thoughts as Lily's stomach grumbled because of hunger causing Vivienne to chuckle, "We gotta feed that stomach now, let's make dinner." She pulled Lily up from her bed.

As they moved around the kitchen, Vivienne nudged Lily playfully. "Come on kid. We need some music in here. What do you say- One direction?"

Lily's eyes lit up despite the lingering fear in them. "Obviously."

Vivienne smirked. "Okay, but you better not mess you the lyrics. I will judge you."

Lily scoffed. "Please, I know them better than you do."

Evelyn chuckled from where she stood at the stove, stirring the soup. "Oh, this I have to see."

Vivienne grabbed a wooden spoon, pretending it was a microphone, and dramatically started singing the opening lines of What Makes You Beautiful. Lily instantly joined in, matching her energy as they danced around the kitchen, passing ingredients back and forth, chopping vegetables in rhythm to the song.

By the time they reached the chorus, they were laughing so hard that Lily nearly dropped the bowl she was holding. Vivienne caught it just in time, spinning dramatically like it was a part of the performance.

"You almost destroyed dinner, kid." She teased, grinning.

"Totally worth it," Lily shot back, still giggling.

Evelyn, standing by the stove, simply watched them, a soft smile on her lips. For a moment she let herself forget the fear, the worry, the weight of the unknown pressing down on her. Right now, all she was her daughter laughing, free of the nightmares that had haunted her for weeks. And Vivienne- so effortlessly slipping into their world, filling the spaces that had been too quiet for too long.

"You two are ridiculous," Evelyn said, shaking her head with amusement.

"But you love us," Vivienne quipped, winking at her.

Evelyn let out a small laugh. "Yeah, I do."

And for a little while, as the smell of hand cooked food filled the air and their voices carried through the house, the darkness outside didn't seem so close.

Dinner was warm, comforting- not just because of the food but because of the people. They ate together at the small dinning table, laughter filling the spaces between bites. Vivienne told stories, ones that made Lily roll her eyes and Evelyn shake her head with a smile.

And Lily, for the first time in weeks, ate without glancing over her time in weeks, ate without glancing over her shoulder or jumping at every small sound.

As the plates were cleared away, Evelyn let out a soft sigh. "it's late. We should get some rest."

Lily hesitated, her fingers gripping the hem of her sweater. Vivienne caught the movement and didn't give her a chance to ask.

"I'm staying," Vivienne said, voice gentle but firm. "And so is your mom. We're not going anywhere."

Lily's lips parted slightly, her eyes flickering between them as if searching for reassurance. Then, she nodded.

They all ended up in Lily's room, bundled together on the bed like they had done years ago when Lily was little and afraid of thunderstorms. Evelyn sat against the headboard; her arm wrapped around Lily as the girl curled up against her. Vivienne lay on the other side, tossing the blanket over all of them.

The warmth of the room, the steady sound of their breathing, and the quiet hum of safety wrapped around them.

Lily thought, this was home, this was family.

And for the first time in a long time, Lily fell asleep without fear.

╰━━━━━∙⋆⋅⋆∙━━━━━╯

In Mystic falls, Rose and Trevor had Kidnapped Elena and Katherine was caged in the tome.

Tyler broke his curse and became a wolf.

Not knowing any of this Vivienne fell asleep, this was the calm before the storm.

He was not far behind, it will happen sooner than anybody expected, it'll be sight to see, but right now Vivienne had to do so much, there were so many things coming at her way, so many people.

Tomorrow will be a hectic day for her, she'll have to be stronger than ever before. The threat lingered in the air; it will change many lives.
